Web Design Terms You Should Know

There is a lot that goes into building a website—from the simplest thing like picking a color pallet that goes with your brand to something complex like incorporating e-commerce on your site. Even if you are passing the baton of to someone else to create your site for you, it helps to have some basic knowledge about web design. That way, you can help guide them in the right direction to create your dream site. Here are four things that everyone should understand on a basic level when starting a new website

Responsive Web Design

The phrase “responsive website” should be in the mix of things that you are thinking about when you are building your website. Responsive web design means that your website responds to the device screen sizes on which your visitors are viewing your site. Your website should look great and fit a desktop screen, but it also needs to “respond” to a smaller screen like on an iPhone. Mobile use is on the rise, and if your business website isn’t mobile friendly, your business will suffer in 2017.

Focal Point

Your website visitors don’t necessarily want to be on your website for long, so one of the easiest ways to hook them is by drawing them in with focal points. Focal points can be anything from large typography or a very prominent button to eye-catching designs. Anything that draws the viewers’ attention to a specific location on the page is a focal point.

Above the Fold

Above the fold can simply be described as all the content that you can see on your website before you scroll down. Information hierarchy is very important in this instance because you want to have your most relevant information be the first thing your viewers see. For example, you viewers should understand what your website is about, and see a couple call to actions all within a glance at your website. UX and UI

UX design and UI design are commonly misconstrued. UX design, or user experience design, is the process of enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving ease and pleasantness of the interaction between the customer and the product. UI design or user interface design, on the other hand, focuses on the look, feel, and interactivity of a product. User interface design closely resembles that of what a graphic designer might do on a daily basis. For more information about both UX and UI design check out this article.
